What is a Certified Arborist?

The ISA arborist certification is a nongovernmental, voluntary process by which individuals can document their base of knowledge. It operates without mandate of law and is an internal, self-regulating device administered by the International Society of Arboriculture. Certification provides a measurable assessment of an individual’s knowledge and competence required to provide proper tree care.

An ISA Certification provides a measurable assessment of an individual’s knowledge in the competencies needed for proper tree care.

Certified Arborists are individuals who have achieved a level of knowledge in the art and science of tree care through experience and by passing a comprehensive examination developed by some of the nation’s leading experts on tree care. Certified Arborists must also continue their education to maintain their certification. Therefore, they are more likely to be up-to-date on the latest knowlege and techniques in arboriculture.

What Can an Arborist Do for You?

An ISA Certified Arborist can provide preventative as well as continual care and maintenance to ensure the structure, safety and overall health of your trees. Proper care of trees will encourage healthy growth and vigor which in turn will help defend a tree from insects, disease, and poor site conditions (typically seen in urban settings). Certified Arborists will abide by ANSI A300 standards for tree care practices, providing you with peace of mind that your investment into your trees will be done so the right way.

What are the ANSI A300 Standards for Tree Care?

They are voluntary industry consensus standards developed by the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) and written by a committee called the Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) A300, whose mission is to develop consensus performance standards based on current research and sound practice for writing specification to manage trees, shrubs and other woody plants.
